“A cabinet of curiosities, a spoken opera, a musical, and a cinematic bouquet all wrapped into one.” —Der Tagesspiegel

New Yorkers were last impressed by his film installation ManifestoCate Blanchett stars in the film. Julian Rosefeldt is an artist and filmmaker who creates elaborately staged films to examine the power and conventions of cinema as an allegory of societal or individual behavior. He continues his examination with the multi-channel film project EuphoriaThe book explores capitalism, colonialism and the powerful effects of unlimited economic growth on society.
This new immersive work is scored by Samy Moussa’s original music, with an additional composition from Cassie Kinoshi. This work is presented in an arena-like setting. Park Avenue Armory commission fully surrounds the viewer with life-size projections of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and acclaimed jazz drummers Terri Lyne Carrington, Peter Erskine, Yissy García, Eric Harland, and Antonio Sanchez, whose rhythmic and narrative nature mirrors the machinery of economy.
Thoughts and musings from a variety of sources from economists, business magnates, writers, and celebrities — from the likes of Warren Buffet, Ayn Rand, and Milton Friedman to Audre Lorde, John Steinbeck, Donna Haraway, and Snoop Dogg — are reinterpreted as poetic monologues in real and imagined scenes of euphoric production and consumption, including a bank lobby that fills with surreal dance choreographies and acrobatics, five unhoused men discussing economic theory, and an empty supermarket with a prowling singing tiger. This is a monument to greed that aims at raising important questions about the success and lasting legacy of entrepreneurship.
EuphoriaThe exhibit is open until January 8, 2023.
