Juxtapoz Magazine – Natural Light Jeff Canham’s Plant Sculptures

His woodworking and design practices are still deeply rooted. Jeff CanhamIn Natural Lightat Public Land GalleryAnother body of work by the artist demonstrates his ability to transform living flora in to inanimate forms.

Canham, who is based in San Francisco’s outer sunset neighborhood, shares a space with a furniture and surfboard manufacturer. It is there where he sees the creative potential in his studio mates’ discarded wood fragments, reconfiguring while reimagining what kind of “plant” each piece can grow into. Canham continues to exhibit his fine skills as a veteran painter and sign-painting artist, with a few pieces that show his signature handiwork, which can be seen throughout San Francisco, the Bay Area, and beyond.

Jeff Canham’s extensive body of work truly mimics both the flow of his community and the ocean that frames it. His plant sculptures and sign work are full of naturalistic features and smooth lines. They evoke a feeling of nostalgia and charm that reflects the mood of San Francisco. Canham describes his art practice as “bottomless,” motivated by the infinite inspiration and creative possibilities that come about as he makes each piece. He said, “Everytime I make one, it’s an idea for another.” Lucky us.
