Almodóvar Publishes With Controversy The Poster Of Parallel Mothers
On September 10, Pedro Almodóvar’s new film, ‘Parallel Mothers’, will be released after its debut as the opening film of the 78th Venice Film Festival and the closing of the New York Film Festival.
Penelope Cruz and Milena Smit lead the cast of the film, which the filmmaker shot during the pandemic and whose cast is completed by Israel Elejalde, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma.
After enjoying the official trailer, we already have the first poster, which once again has surprised by its surreal aesthetic, as is usual in the DNA of Producciones El Deseo: it highlights the close-up of a nipple with a suggestive drop of breast milk , framed in such a way that it simulates a crying eye and refers to the most iconic image of ‘An Andalusian Dog’, the surrealist short film by Luis Buñuel in which Salvador Dalí collaborated .
And it is that the La Mancha director returns in this film to the themes of motherhood and family with a story that he himself has described as “a very intense drama” about “imperfect mothers.”
The account of El Deseo has shared the image of the film’s poster and the networks have not been slow to react to the image. One of the first was Agustín Almodóvar, who defined the poster as “iconic motherhood.”
In addition to the film’s crew, including Penélope Cruz, the poster’s author, artist Javier Jaén has also shared the poster, and it’s not the first time he’s faced with possible nipple pixelation.

As a result of the publication, the poster is causing some controversy and a great division in social networks. While some defend it for its transgressive character, and find it “wonderful”, others disqualify it; some even brand it as “extreme” and on the other hand, there are also those who refer to the fact that the poster enters the game of censorship in social networks, thus making reference to the well-known image policy regarding showing female nipples in Instagram and Facebook.
“Two women share the hospital room where they are about to give birth. They are two single women, both with an unplanned pregnancy,” reads the beginning of the film’s synopsis, which has become the fastest post-production of the film. the last decades of Almodóvar’s career , since filming ended, after 10 weeks of work, on the last days of May.
‘Parallel mother’ has been shot between March and April of this 2021 and in it, Almodóvar rescues two clear references of his cinema, the everyday woman as the protagonist, and the figure of the mother. He also refocuses the story on the streets of Madrid, as he did in ‘Women on the edge of a nervous breakdown’ and ‘Pepi, Luci, Bom and other girls of the bunch’.
