The tenor Juan Diego Flórez , one of the most important voices in the world, has filled the Cap Roig auditorium with opera in a first-rate international performance when many festivals have run out of them due to the difficulty of attracting such a star in the current circumstances.
This event, organized by Clipper’s Live with the encouragement of CaixaBank , can nevertheless boast of having had one of the most outstanding talents of its genre today, despite the fact that the performance has had to shorten the encores due to the appearance of a thunderstorm .
In spite of everything, the Peruvian has completed the program and, in addition to making the most of the potential of his voice, he has also displayed his charisma on stage with comments of praise to the surroundings of Cap Roig, gardens on the Mediterranean Sea which he has defined as “a beautiful place”, and some joke when the rain has come.
Juan Diego Flórez: “I like that the Cap Roig Festival is open to the lyric”
At the beginning, Rigoletto by Verdi, “Questa o quella” and “La donna è mobile” to continue with “Una furtiva lagrima” and “Tombe degli avi miei … Fra poco a me ricovero” by Donizetti.
As usual in these cases, Juan Diego Flórez has drawn great pieces in the memory of the entire public and has traveled the history of opera by the hand of Rossini, Edouard Lalo, Massenet or Puccini. The pianist Vincenzo Scalera has given him some respite in the form of a musical solo before reaching the last two blocks, first a Neapolitan one with “Core n’grato”, “O sole mio” and “Torna a surriento” and, later, one Latin American with “Amapola”, “Contigo en la Distancia” and “Júrame”.
Juan Diego Flórez has felt comfortable on a stage that he stepped on for the first time and which he has arrived after a long career starting in Lima.
Flórez is known for his music, but also for his involvement in the social project Sinfornía por el Perú , a non-profit organization that helps children and young people at risk in that country through music education.
The fact is that, once the succession of arias that made up the show concluded, the Peruvian has once again planted himself before the public and, although with the intention of surprising it with popular songs, the electrical storm has forced him to limit that extra repertoire to everything a classic like “Cucurrucucú paloma”.
Cap Roig, on his return in 2021 after the forced postponement of last year due to the pandemic, has wanted to recover the evening dedicated to the lyric that he incorporated into his programming and, in an edition complicated by the restrictions resulting from the health crisis, he has been able to have an international tenor of the prestige of the Peruvian.
Juan Diego Flórez is on tour in Europe and chooses invitations that provide something more than a simple musical performance like the one proposed by the municipality of Ravello in Italy, where he was present last Thursday.
He will return to Italy in August, to Pesaro, and he also has planned visits to Switzerland, Austria and, already in September, to Madrid , where the bar will be very high after the waste shown in Cap Roig, that “precious place” where the rain he has bothered but has respected his entire program.
