Travel To The World Of Guinovart At Thyssen de Sant Feliu de Guíxols
The Thyssen Space of Sant Feliu de Guíxols (Girona) proposes until October 17 a journey through the works of Josep Guinovart in a new temporary exhibition, ‘Guinovart Universe’, which brings together some sixty pieces by the Catalan artist.
The exhibition covers different creations that the painter, draftsman and engraver conceived between 1948 and 2007 and among which ‘Exvots’ stands out, four large panels that the family found without waiting in the industrial warehouse of Agramunt (Lleida) where they kept the work by Guinovart.
“Nobody knew they existed and they appeared by chance. They are not in any catalog and they were packed. We believe that he had them ready to send them to Madrid, where he had to make an exhibition before he died,” said the president of the Espai Guinovart Foundation, Maria Guinovart, this Friday during the presentation, according to Efe.
Likewise, another of the works on display that the public had not been able to see for 30 years is ‘La Barca’, which is part of a private collection.
The Sant Feliu de Guíxols exhibition is divided into two areas: physical geography and human geography , as detailed by the curator, Pilar Giró. The first, located on the first floor of the Thyssen Space, includes works that travel across land, sea and countryside, through Guinovart’s memories.
On the second floor, dedicated to human geography, Giró has chosen to go through different objects, cartographies, forests and even the soul, to show the relationship between the human being and the territory.
Painting, sculpture, engraving …
“The pieces blur the borders of the different disciplines that Guinovart touched: the paintings become sculptures, the sculptures become engravings and the engravings in collages”, has indicated the curator.
According to Giró, the objective of the exhibition is “to pay homage to the nature of an open work with which Guinovart defined the reason for his plastic research, the gaze of the public that makes sense and meaning their own”.
The future museum
On the other hand, the mayor of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Carles Motas, has detailed how the works of the future Thyssen Museum are progressing, currently limited to this space that annually hosts an exhibition.
In September, he confirmed, the urbanization works will be tendered and, in January, they will begin with the intention that the reform of the building where he will stay begins next summer and ends at the end of 2023.
Green light from the Government to the rental contract for Baroness Thyssen’s collection
“However, it is still necessary to close the agreement with the Department of Culture of the Generalitat and with the Ministry of Culture to specify the economic contribution that the two institutions would make,” he added.
The person in charge of the Carmen Thyssen artistic collection, Guillermo Cervera, has advanced that they have acquired about 80 new paintings for the Catalan painting collection, which will give way to future equipment and which already has about 240 works.
Among the new pieces, he added, are some by Rafael Durancamps, a portrait of Román Rivera and a work by Josep de Togores that until recently was exhibited at the Reina Sofía in Madrid.
The Thyssen collection in Madrid
In parallel, this Thursday the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid has reported that the Carmen Thyssen collection, following the agreement of the contract with the Ministry of Culture , will be located on the ground floor of the art gallery, which after a few weeks of movement of works and painting rooms has reopened with a reorganization of the space.
