As The Times recalls this Sunday , on the outside wall of the prison there is a work by Banksy, painted this year. The play depicts a prisoner escaping from jail using a long sheet of paper that comes out of a typewriter, a reference to Wilde’s imprisonment in Reading between 1895 and 1897.

The artist revealed to the Times that his idea is to turn the mythical Reading prison into an arts center rather than have it sold to property developers and torn down.

Banksy plans to sell the template with which he painted the Reading wall for 15 million euros , which could thus cover the cost of the building.

“It is rare to find a 500 meter long, uninterrupted, ready-to-paint surface in the middle of a city,” Banksy, whose true identity is not known, told the Times . “I promised myself that I would paint the wall even before I knew what it was, ” he added.

Banksy’s bid has laid out plans to turn the prison into an arts complex and is supported by the Reading City Council. The abandoned jail, formally known as Reading Gaol, has been closed since 2013 and is owned by the Ministry of Justice . It went on sale for the first time in October 2019.

“Oscar Wilde is the patron saint of breaking two contrasting ideas to create magic. Turning the place that destroyed it into a haven for art is so perfect that we have to do it, ” said Banksy, who joins celebrities like Judi Dench, Stephen Fry or Kate Winslet in their fight to save the building.
