Filming ‘Dune’ Timothée Chalamet Kicked Me In The Balls And They Got That Shot
Dune lands this Friday, September 17 in theaters , and one of its great protagonists is Jason Momoa . We spoke with the Aquaman actorabout how his love of samurai filmmaking has helped him portray Duncan Idaho .
What were the biggest challenges and difficulties when filming Dune, besides having to lift Timothée Chalamet in your arms?
I think the hardest thing was not smiling. It’s a fucking honor to be a part of Dune. There has been nothing difficult in this movie. As for the scene in which I hold Timothée in my arms, I recommend that you watch it in slow motion. Right when I pick him up off the ground, that thug kicks me in the balls . It’s amazing that they stuck with that shot.
Have you read the book?
No. I hadn’t even seen the movie. I grew up with a single mother in Iowa and we didn’t see Conan, the Barbarian, or Dune . What we saw was Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire .
How did you get to the project?
I was at Sundance snowboarding during the festival and someone called me saying that Denis Villeneuve wanted to talk to me. I came down the mountain and contacted him. He had a 60 page bible. He gave me a pitch about the movie and Duncan Idaho. I said, “Look, you don’t have to pitch me about anything. I’ll bring you free coffee if necessary. I would do anything to be in your movie. ” This has been like winning the lottery. It’s the first time something like this has happened to me, having the opportunity to work at that level. This is cinema. It is adventure, but it is cinema. It is difficult to find cinema in an adventure of this epic scale .

Duncan Idaho is an honorable man. How did you introduce that honor into your performance?
My favorite actor is Toshiro Mifune . My favorite action movies are samurai movies. In fact, I always try to give all my characters something from that universe. For me the honor is being able to give your life and your soul for another person. I would only do that for my family.
