Joel Souza, The Director Shot In Alec Baldwin’s Accident
Today’s news is marked by the terrible accident that occurred during the filming of Rust , where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died after being shot by Alec Baldwin . The circumstances of the accident are yet to be clarified (the New Mexico police have already launched an investigation), but Baldwin apparently fired the pistol thinking it was a blank, killing Hutchins and wounding Joel Souza , director of Rust .
Souza has been taken by ambulance to a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in critical condition, according to the spokesman for the sheriff’s office Juan Ríos.to the media. A few minutes ago, however, we learned from actress Frances Fisher that he has already been discharged from the hospital.
Born on June 14, 1973, in Fremont, California, Souza has a wife and two children, and has been involved in film for more than a decade, regularly writing and directing his own films. The filmmaker debuted in 2010 with Hanna’s Gold , a children’s film marked by the protagonism of the twins Morissa O’Mara and Alana O’Mara , which focused on the adventures of two sisters on their father’s ranch in search of a buried treasure.
A year later, Souza drastically changed the register to write the libretto on which Machine Head was based , a horror film by Jim Valdez where three girls were chased by a psychopath while on vacation.
Souza returned to family comedy in 2015, with Christmas Trade . They starred Denise Richards and William Baldwin (Alec’s brother, coincidentally), and the film featured a typical body-swapping fiction (father-son) on Christmas Eve.
The director stayed within this genre in a film that he directed, although he did not write, the same year: Ghost Squad , centered on a group of kids who set out to spend a Halloween night inside a haunted house. And in 2017, he switched to a thriller with Break Night : a film focused on the escape of a safe thief who apparently made him discover a genre where he was comfortable.
This is how we come to his most ambitious and recognizable film to date, While the City Sleeps . Originally titled Crown Vic , this detective intrigue crossed his path with that of Alec Baldwin (who agreed to produce the film as he is also responsible for producing Rust ), narrating the misadventures of a police couple played by Thomas Jane and Luke Kleintank.
On a hellish night While the City Sleeps was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival to hit US theaters in November 2019, getting mixed reviews but making enough noise that Souza could pull off his next project: aAn independent western that would be shot on the Bonanza Creek ranch in New Mexico.
